A burst of spontaneous portraiture, quick and dynamic. Often, I paint people looking directly at the viewer to capture something of the intimacy between artist and sitter, and viewer and sitter. The reciprocal nature of regarding each other. However, this portrait and the subject’s preoccupation with something out of frame lends a tenderness to the act of painting someone in a moment of distraction. The emotion present in our friend’s lives is tacit here, when usually explicit. Our lives run alongside each other and exist concurrently; we are witnesses to each other.
